Replacement guidelines

Here are some basic guidelines regarding odometer gear replacement and repair, and some specific details as well:

  • always make sure that the mechanism is clean and there are no debris or other remains from original broken gears between the teeth
  • no need to use any lubricants, as the gear materials are self lubricating or low-friction
  • if applicable, it's worth checking PCB and refreshing cold solder joints and replace old dried-out electrolytic capacitors (beware correct polarity)

Specific for Motometer and VDO 3-gear systems:

Our 12 toothed gear is designed to fit directly and tightly on the 2mm steel shaft.
Before fitting, you need to remove the remaining brass sleeve from the original gear, shown in green on below picture.
(reason for this is the sleeve diameter is not uniform, it is not possible to accurately design a gear onto it).
To remove the brass sleeve DO NOT apply any pulling, twisting or bending force!
Just carefully apply pressure on the sleeve with pliers and crack it from a few directions, then it will come off easily.
